A while back both myself and a few alliance members had the same problem. Unfortunately we tried logging out and back in, but it kept happening the rest of the evening. The next day it stopped leading us to believe ArenaNet did something that caused the problem. How long have you been having the issue?

I've seen it a few times, but it's always gone away later that day or the next day.

That would happen to me for weeks on end at least twice a year, little spurts of that disconnected friends list BS randomly.

It happens to me only when I'm playing on my laptop. On my desktop I have yet to see this problem. But yeah, it happens daily. It's just a very brief interruption of your internet. Most likely to happen if you're using a wireless connection.

The only time I had trouble with the connection was after an update by Guild Wars on my desktop. The next day there was another update that fixed it. I've never had the same problem again.

still having this problem
I have been having this problem for awhile now, and its damned annoying, at first i thought it was my router because i kept getting kicked offline so i bought a new router, now its just my friends list which asks me to reconnect, and i do alot of trading and its irritating because i message someone for something i want and they end up selling it because it says i'm offline. I understand that some of you the problem has gone away after an update, but im sure there are others like me still looking for an answer.

Best guesses, off the top of my head:
Wireless connection. There have been situations where a wireless router or computer is set to search for a better connection every so often. But that usually results in a total drop out, not just a loss of the friends status. If you are using wireless, try using a wired connection (temporarily) to see if that is the cause. If you are using a wired connection, try shutting down the router's or computer's wireless function (temporarily). If it is caused by the wireless function, check the manual and/or the settings in your router/computer to turn off any "search for a stronger signal" type thing.
DNS. Depending upon how the link to the friends network is handled - I'm not sure if it's hard coded as IPs or soft-coded as URLs - it could be caused by the DNS server in your ISP. Search on here or the web for "free DNS" and try one of the universal DNS services (temporarily).

I am hardwired into my router, and i use 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for my DNS which is google's dns servers. But i only changed that after I started having issues, and it happens on both of my machines, both desktop and laptop. and it doesn't just happen at home it also happens at my office, different ISP all together. Its VERY frustrating.

This started happening to me about a week ago. I get disconnected about once or twice per night and am using a laptop and wireless. I chalked it up to that until I saw this post. It's annoying but I am usually able to jump back into the game where I left off.

ok after getting totally fed up i took my router out of the equation, and guess what, it has been working fine ever since, so i reconnected my router, then i placed my PC in the DMZ, bypassing my router's firewall, and i havent had the problem since.
